Confirmed: Every Lancashire candidate standing in the General Election 2024
The Lancashire Lead, June 7, 2024
So, here we are - 27 days until voting opens and now all the candidates are now confirmed. The internal squabbling is done, £500 deposits paid, and each party has a name to place on its signs.
While the Liberal Democrats had their choices announced well in advance and Labour had confirmed all theirs by last week, there were still a few question marks for the other party’s going into the final day.
Notably, the Conservatives had yet to announce a candidate for Blackpool South, the seat it won in 2019 after 12 years under Labour. Scott Benton’s time as MP was mired in controversy and ended in scandal, with Labour romping home in a by-election a matter of weeks ago.
The candidate has since been named as Zak Khan, but the Hyndburn councillor of the same name has been keen to stress it is not him.
Aside from Ben Wallace and Mark Menzies, all of the previous MPs have stood to defend their seats and there’s several Tories hoping they can defy the polling in their own constituencies, even if Rishi Sunak keeps blundering through the national campaign.
In Hyndburn, Conservative Sara Britcliffe appeared to not only have to deal with the threat of Labour being tipped to win the seat back, but also having a family member on the ballot sheet. Her first cousin Matthew Britcliffe said he plenned to stand for the Workers Party of Britain - but his name does not appear on the official list of persons nominated.
Speaker of the House Sir Lindsay Hoyle stands again as Labour’s Chorley candidate and, in accordance with convention, most of the larger parties have not fielded a candidate against him.
Notable independent candidates include Michael Lavalette, a former city councillor who is standing on a pro-Palestinian platform in Preston; Altaf ‘Tiger’ Patel, who quit the Conservative Party over the Government’s stance on the Gaza-crisis; and Sean Halsall in Southport who quit Labour over the same issue among others.
The full, confirmed list of Lancashire candidates is below. Again, I’ve included Southport as it now contains three wards which have moved from the South Ribble seat and remain in Lancashire County Council’s area.
